Frequently Asked Questions

MASSAGE , INFRARED SAUNA THERAPY & CRYO THERAPY QUESTIONS:

When should I arrive for my appointment?
Your therapist will need to review important medical information prior to your first appointment. This takes 10-15 minutes to complete, so please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your first session so that it doesn’t interfere with your massage time. After your first session you won’t need to fill out any paperwork prior to sessions and you can arrive when needed.
Where will my massage or bodywork session take place?
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable room. Soft music will also be played for your relaxing comfort.
Must I be completely undressed?
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. Please dress down to your comfort level. You will be properly draped during the entire session. The more skin, the more the therapist can help you with any issue. Typically clients will dress down to their underwear, and women will also remove their bra.
Will the therapist be present when I disrobe?
The therapist will leave the room prior to dressing down to your desired level, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet and blanket provided.
Will I be covered during the session?
Yes. Proper draping will be provided by the therapist to ensure both your comfort level and the therapist's. The therapist will only reveal areas for proper massage, no genital regions nor female breasts will be revealed at any point during the session.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, gluteal region, feet, hands, head, shoulders, pectoral region, neck, face, scalp, and possibly the abdominal region at special request from the client or specific recommendation by the therapist according to the clients goals. Should you desire not to receive any of these areas, please inform your therapist.
Should I drink a lot of water before and/or after my massage?
It is great to stay hydrated throughout the day, whether you are getting a massage that day or not. The total fluid ounces your body should be getting in water is your total body weight divided by 2 = total fluid ounces of water. (IE: If your weight is 180 lbs, you should be drinking 90 ounces of water A DAY). After your massage, be sure to continue to drink plenty of water. The massage will help with blood circulation through the body, and drinking water will help with the body's process of getting rid of the toxins in the body even faster. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic and highly caffeinated liquids until at least 12 hours after your session.
What will the massage or bodywork feel like?
A relaxing Swedish massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system, create blood flow and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. A light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil/lotion applied also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting, it should never hurt or be painful.
Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more. We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you. In addition, there are other modalities of massage that are provided with Peaceful Healing that you may be interested in: Deep Tissue Massage, Hot Stone Therapy, Localized Cryo Therapy, Prenatal/Side Lying, Integrative Lymphatic, Rain Drop Therapy, Clinical Foot Therapy, Sugar Scrubs, and/or Sports Massage. *Check out the "Services and Rates" page regarding further description of each modality*
What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?
Prior to the massage, feel free to ask the therapist any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage, make yourself comfortable and relax as much as possible, closing your eyes is normal. The more you are relaxed the better your therapist can give you the proper massage. The therapist will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people simply close their eyes and completely relax; communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the therapist's technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.
Will I fall asleep?
Everyone responds to massage differently and it could result in your body and mind drifting off into sleep. This is absolutely normal and acceptable for your body to experience. Most people try to refuse falling asleep because they feel they will miss out on the experience; however, it is your body telling you that you may need more sleep and relaxation. This will have no effect in how your therapist performs.
How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?
Most people feel very relaxed; some short term effects after a session could result in sleepiness and even dizziness if you had a relaxing session. Be sure to get up from the table slowly and take your time, walking around and drinking water will typically bring you back to your senses (and the real world). Some may even experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity from so many years. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.
What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?
Yes. That's why it's imperative that, before you begin your session, the therapist asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required. Please communicate with your doctor and therapist regarding your health and receiving massage.

INFRARED SAUNA THERAPY QUESTIONS:
How does it work?

Think about the sun, and how it's amazing light benefits our body in so many ways; but without the dangerous UV rays, or risk of sunburn. 55% of the suns rays are infrared, and even pre-mature babies are kept in infrared light to keep their temperatures stable. It is completely safe and the technology, research and science on blocking the unhealthy wavelengths and EMF (electromotive force) are what back the safe and healthy life style benefits of infrared therapy. There are 3 specific wavelengths (invisible to the eye, just like the sun) used within the sauna, plus Red-Light therapy. These wavelengths are classified as "Near Infrared Light" (NIR) "Mid Infrared Light" (MIR) and "Far Infrared Light" (FIR). Far is the longest wavelength and benefits most when wanting to increase circulation and decrease blood pressure, this heats the air and superficial layers of our skin. Mid is a little bit hotter, with the boost of heat you get deeper healing benefits such as for your joints and bones. Near is the hottest wavelength which stimulates cellular regeneration and pain relief, helps with cognitive function and sleep pattern. Red light therapy heals the skin, such as burns, scars and increases collagen production.

How long does it take?

There are options available for all age ranges and goals. Starting at sessions as little as 15 minutes, and extending up to 1 full hour, there are many options for a comfortable, healthy and satisfying experience in reaching your health agenda.

Should I get Infrared done before or after a workout?

*Short answer: Before = helps with performance and a great stimulate for warming up the body. After = Decrease injury/tissue damage, muscle recovery.

*Long answer: I personally recommend using the sauna after working out in most cases; however if you are tying in a massage treatment after a workout, then I would recommend the sauna take place after the workout, but before the massage.

Why add Infrared Therapy to Peaceful Healing's services?

Overall, after doing research, I came to the conclusion that this would be a great fit for my current clients and future clients to come, at a reasonable and fair rate. The testimonials from people I know and the science and research behind the Sunlighten Sauna team was outstanding and hard to pass up, knowing that it would only positively benefit every one of my clients, friends and family members. As a therapist I am always looking for new modalities to improve physical discomforts, promote healthy skin, and obtain a space for mental, emotional and spiritual wellness. I personally have yet to try the infrared sauna myself, due to the contraindications of my current pregnancy, but I know it will help me in the long run. However, I have personally seen and experienced the superficial health benefits of Red-Light therapy alone, so I believe the deeper penetration of near, mid and far infrared will only be greater for my body.

Should I add an Infrared session before, or after my massage appointment?

Short answer: YES!

Long answer:

  • After a massage session, infrared sauna helps detoxify after a massage and enhances the massage effects.
  • Before a massage, the infrared not only stimulates additional blood flow for a smoother and warmed up massage, but it also helps the client get to a relaxed state both mentally and physically to embrace the massage.
  • It is hard to choose from a professional stand point which one outweighs the other, as it really will come down the client and how their body responds, but I would recommend starting with a session before your massage if you aren't sure where to start.

Does it work well with Massage Therapy?

Absolutely. As mentioned above, the sauna only enhances the experience you have with your massage. They truly go hand in hand together to fully treat and heal the body. Another modality I recommend adding if you want to go another step further would be Cryo Therapy on your painful/inflamed area(s).

How often should I get Infrared therapy done?

As any therapy, consistency is key to receiving longer-lasting improved results. Each client responds differently to treatment(s). For some, clients may notice immediate changes within a short period while others may hardly notice any effects. For high level training athletes, I recommend singing up for the monthly unlimited membership, and coming in a minimum of 2 times a week. Those suffering from chronic pain, it is recommended a minimum of one (1) treatment per week to bi-weekly after treating the area to a confined level of pain. Those having issue with general aches, treatment is recommended to stunt the pain as the aggravation reoccurs. For post-surgery patient procedures (with doctor consent) or recent injuries (strain/sprain), it is highly recommended for prompt treatment for multiple and consistent care, up to 7 visits a week until swelling is reduce and pain levels have dropped. Ultimately, it depends on the client’s goals, their need for relief, what they are able to afford, and how much time they are able to commit to getting optimal results.

How much Sauna, is too much Sauna?

One hour a day is the max time recommended. You are received health benefits within minutes upon entering, and at around the 30-minute mark is when the healing stages really start to strengthen. As far as how many per week, one a day, 7-days a week is 100% safe - depending on the person and body responses. I will always recommend to newbie, start slow, hotter isn't always better, and listen to your body!

Is it uncomfortable?

Everyone responds to Infrared differently. Also depending on the program you choose your body may experience more heat than other treatments, which may be a discomfort. However, the infrared was created to have a more comfortable experience to sweat easier with less heat.

What are the contraindications?

The main contraindications are pregnancy, pace makers/defibrillator The sauna should not be used with these conditions.

Other contraindications or hesitations by the client may be discussed with a doctor.

  • Recent (Acute) injuries - There are specific settings that are still safe in the sauna for positive results without stressing your body injury.
  • Elderly and Children - The core body temperature fluctuates at different temperature according to age. Shorter increments are encouraged according to the client.
  • Chronic Conditions/Diseases with Reduced ability to sweat - Multiple Sclerosis, Central Nervous System Tumors and Diabetes with Neuropathy are conditions that may be associated with impaired sweating. Consult a physician.
  • Hemophiliacs/Prone to Bleeding - Without a doctor's consent, the use of infrared saunas should be avoided by any who is predisposed to bleeding.
  • Fever - Fever should subside before safely using the sauna as your body is already naturally fighting infection. Consult a doctor.
  • Menstruation - It is safe to use the sauna if a woman is menstruating, please use proper under garments. Be mindful that the sauna use may temporarily increase menstrual flow.
  • Implants - Mental pins, rods, artificial joints , or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and thus are not heated by this system. If you have concern, consult a physician prior to use.
  • Cardiovascular issues/Obesity or Diabetes - Consult a physician prior to use. There are specific settings and time slots that are still safe in the sauna for positive results without stressing your body.
  • Medications - Consult a physician prior to use. There are specific settings and time slots that are still safe in the sauna for positive results without stressing your body.
  • Alcohol/Drug Abuse - Never attempt the "sweat out" a hangover approach. Alcohol or drug abuse may cause unconsciousness.

CRYO THERAPY QUESTIONS:

How does it work?

The subzero air is blown out of a hose, ranging in 9 different air speeds and adjusted according to the localized area size and sensitivity. Stimulating and triggering the central nervous system’s norepinephrine response of an overactive immune system (inflammation), thus helping in many areas such as pain, lack of blood flow, and swelling.

Is it painful?

Each client is different with their nerve endings sensations. The skin temperature of the client is lowered anywhere between 30° to 50° less than starting temperature. It is a very cold sensation and may be painful in short increments during treatment; however, the re-warming process instantaneously begins when cryo treatment concludes, reducing the brisk sensation. For the best result it is recommended to drop to the minimum of 50.° The temperature drop can always be adjusted to the client’s comfort, eventually working up to the potential goal in the future.

How long does it take?

The therapy is typically done within a 3-minute time frame, depending on the size of the localized area.

Should I get Cryo Therapy done before or after a workout?

Great question, different answers:

*Short answer: Before = helps with performance. After = Decrease injury/tissue damage.

*Long answer: I personally recommend cryo therapy before working out in most cases. Please, be sure to practice a pre-workout warm-up still. Applying cryo beforehand helps create a stimulating response to the brain; sparking the nervous system, all while increasing circulation (oxygen through the body) and decreasing inflammation. The nervous system controls the response in your body’s action and reactions through the muscles, resulting in anti-inflammatory response. Cryo therapy is not recommend directly after a workout, wait at least an hour for your body to regulate the pro-inflammatory responses. An hour after your workout is when your body begins to respond to the pro-inflammatory response throughout the body, by creating good anti-inflammatory responses, your body is made to experience and produce this healthy reaction to stress.¹ However, if you are training competitively, cryo is recommended immediately after a hardcore workout to trigger an increased healthy dose of anti-inflammatory release of norepinephrine to your body, to reduce the risk of muscular tissue damage.

What are the contraindications?

Cases of the following are when cryo therapy should not be applied:

  • Raynaud’s Phenomenon
  • Cold Urticaria
  • Open Wounds
  • Damp Skin

Does it work well with Massage Therapy?

Absolutely. Increasing blood flow to the area will result in bringing a dilated source of oxygen and nutrients to the treated area. During this process, any remaining metabolic waste from new injury, chronic pain or general lack of blood flow is flushed out, promoting more effective healing. There is an increased advantage in using varieties of techniques of massage therapy after a Cryo treatment to support the increase of blood flow. With the integration of massage, the systems of the body are able to respond quicker with the precise therapeutic touch, allowing the systems of the body to correspond and interpret healing properly.

How often should I get Cryo therapy done?

As any therapy, consistency is key to receiving longer-lasting improved results. Each client responds differently to treatment(s). For some, clients may notice drastic changes while others may hardly notice any effects. Regardless of how a client’s body responds within his/her nerve endings (physical feeling), cryo therapy is helping within multiple systems of the body. For high level training athletes, a minimum of 2-3 treatments is recommended per week. Those suffering from chronic pain, it is recommended a minimum of one (1) treatment per week to bi-weekly. Those having issue with general aches, treatment is recommended to stunt the pain as the aggravation reoccurs. For post-surgery patient procedures (with doctor consent) or recent injuries (strain/sprain), it is highly recommended for prompt treatment for multiple and consistent care, up to 7 visits a week. Ultimately, it depends on the client’s goals, their need for relief, what they are able to afford, and how much time they are able to commit to getting optimal results.

1 “…exercise affords the body an opportunity to practice responding to stress, streamlining the communication between the systems involved in the stress response…The less active we become, the more challenged we are in dealing with stress.”
